Preventative Care
Preventative Dentistry is about creating healthy dental habits, like brushing and flossing, along with regular dental visits. Here at Gerald G. Gutsell D.D.S. Ltd. we will help our patients develop good habits and perform routine cleanings and dental exams to help reduce cavities and gum disease.
Dental Exams
Having a dental professional perform an exam is important for maintaining your dental health. Your medical and dental history will be reviewed, along with digital X-rays and photographs taken as needed. During your dental exam we will do a thorough evaluation of your mouth and gum tissue for inflammation or signs of oral cancer. An exam of the teeth for decay, fractures, mobility, or any irregularities in your bite, saliva, or TMJ will be noted. The information collected helps keep your dental chart up- to-date and allows for early diagnosis of any dental problems. Exams are typically completed at every checkup or regular cleaning appointment, but also can be performed as needed due to dental emergencies.
Oral Cancer Screenings
An examination of the mouth, throat, cheeks, tongue, head and neck for signs of cancer or precancerous lesions is crucial for early treatment of oral cancer. We screen for abnormal lesions, red or white patches, and lumps and bumps in the mouth and/or head and neck. There are many risk factors that increase oral cancer risks: including smoking, vaping, chewing tobacco use, or heavy alcohol use.
Digital X-Rays and Photographs
Routine Digital X-Rays are critical for accurate examination and diagnosis of dental problems or diseases, such as tooth decay or a tooth infection. There are several different types of X-rays that we can take to help us see specific areas in the mouth. The use of digital photographs helps us monitor your dental health and keep a comprehensive dental record. These tools allow us to find and maintain any dental problems early, before they become severe or untreatable.
Dental Cleanings
At a professional dental cleaning, the plaque and tartar will be removed from your teeth and your teeth will be polished to remove surface stains. Plaque and bacteria forms on our teeth everyday, but can be removed with tooth brushing and flossing. The areas missed by the brush or hard to reach areas will accumulate more buildup or tartar. All surfaces of the teeth should be brushed at least twice daily. A soft toothbrush and good brushing technique will reduce plaque and bacteria levels. Daily flossing or water flossing is essential to healthy gums too. Good brushing and flossing habits are important to maintain healthy teeth and gums.
Denture Care
Full or partial dentures should be brushed inside and out daily with a toothbrush or denture brush using a denture cleaning solution. Toxic or abrasive cleaners should not be used on dentures. The remaining natural teeth and gums, especially those supporting a partial denture, should be brushed twice daily. At your dental visit, we will professionally clean your dentures, perform a full dental exam, and make adjustments as needed to your appliance.
Sports Mouth Guards
A custom sport mouth guard protects your mouth, teeth, and jaw during sporting activities. We can advise you on an appropriate sports guard depending on the impact of the activity you will be participating in. A custom sport mouth guard will protect against chipped and fractured teeth, protect the jaw from impact, and is available in unique colors and patterns.
